While the boys of the world are swimming, cycling and catching some killer waves, my pastimes of choice on a weekend are getting my hair cut, having a mani and getting married. Or that’s what you’d believe if the world of emoticons was anything to go by.

On a totally time-wasting Whatssap chain with friends the other day, we got onto the subject of the emoji that best represented each of us. Apparently the caterpillar is me to a T. caterpillarHello! I’m OK with that. What I was not so OK with, when I started looking, was the lack of sporty sisters represented. Where’s the surf chick? The Pendleton lookalike? The only tenuously “sporty” offering is the Flameco dancer. She looks like a fun gal – dancerdancerdancer– but she hardly represents all the ways we rock our bodies.

There is no groom emoticon to match the bride. I can only imagine he’s too busy doing triathlons.

  1. I really enjoyed this post. Seemingly small issues like this are the ways in which patriarchy and everyday sexism are subtley reinforced and perpetuated. A succinct and interesting read, maybe you could develop this idea into a longer thesis at some point. I’d love to read it!

    1. Ah thanks for taking the time to comment – nice to hear it struck a chord with you. I agree – there are lots of little things that put women down that you only notice once you start looking!
